ProtonMail is an email service designed with a privacy-first approach. It uses end-to-end encryption and user authentication protocols so that even the creators of ProtonMail can't read your emails, making it one of the best options available for people who value the privacy of their communications. It uses client-side encryption to protect email content and user data before they are sent to ProtonMail servers, unlike other common email providers such as Gmail and Outlook.com. The service can be accessed through a web-mail client, the Tor network, or dedicated iOS and Android apps. Most of the assets of ProtonMail are open source licensed, which makes auditing of the code by third parties easier.

Almost three years ago we started <a href="https://collective68.tech/" target="_blank">Collective68</a>, a collective of people who wanted to turn their passion for open source into a full-time job. While we would commit most of our time to consultancy projects, and would guide various entities towards the use of free software, privacy oriented and standards compliant tools, quite often we would get <em>"yes, but can you set it up for me?"</em> as an answer. Sometimes we could, sometimes we could not, but most of the time we needed more research. This experience helped us realize that there was a gap between the number of services offered by Software as a Service (SaaS) providers of open source, and the potential number of services requested by people, companies, SMEs, organizations and not-for-profits. We did our homework and we also realized that for those entities who did understand the importance of using ethical software, but in the meantime didn't want to deal with 'complicated' technical thingies, it was hard for them to find a 'all in one' solution. While with the services provided by big-tech the on-boarding process is as easy as shooting fish in a barrel, and the off-boarding comes with a headache, in the case of open source, for non-technical people or communities, it's challenging to get started. Considering all of the above, we identified a need that we could fill, and this is how Cloud68.co was born.
# At the beginning we were enthusiastic and terrified.
Enthusiastic because we've always been confident about the future of the project and because we were doing something we were entirely passionate about, but also terrified because we were at the beginning of a long journey and many challenges were on the way.
After long hours of market research, group discussions, business plans and after putting our ideas on paper, we started to build things.
One of the first things we worked on was our website, Cloud68.co, which among our mission and services would also reflect our core beliefs and principles. We gradually started building our internal infrastructure which would consist on: Mattermost for instant chat conversation between our team member, Nextcloud for file-sharing and collaboration, GitLab for website hosting and project management, Zammad for customer support, InvoiceNinja for invoicing. This software tools would also make the list of the first instances that we would launch since we prefer to advise our partners with those tools that we've found to do the work for our own needs. While this list started expanding gradually, we also worked on reflecting our vision of Cloud68.co - a company which makes the use of free and open source software as easy as possible and provides you with **reliable open source digital infrastructure**, and here every word matters:
* **reliable** - because despite being a work in progress, your needs will always be addressed in time and we will stay committed to giving you the best solution.
* **open source**- because we only provide software whose code is publicly available published with permissive licenses.
* **digital infrastructure** - because we won't simply provide you with the hosting space; research, training, on-boarding and consultancy will also be available when needed.

We want to make it easy for every single person to use our services, this is why when you contact our support you're always talking to real people and not to automated bots. We've made it pretty easy for everyone to reach out to our team, not only to 'talk business' but also to say hi or discuss an idea with us: you can join the conversation anytime at our <a href="https://chat.cloud68.co" target="_blank">Mattermost channel</a>, or <a href="https://cloud68.co/schedule-a-call" target="_blank">schedule a call</a> with our team or by <a href="https://cloud68.co/our-virtual-office" target="_blank">sending an email</a> to us, and if you visit Tirana and you'd like to meet up the team, we'd be happy to welcome you in our small, cozy office.
During this first year we've had our moments of glory, alongside the moments we've been feeling overwhelmed.
We're proud to announce that in the moment of writing this blog post we are working with companies, organizations and collectives such as Book Sprints, Coko Foundation, Decentralized Science, OpenStreetMap Foundation, Open Knowledge Belgium, punctum books and Transformatorio to mention a few. We are proud to have partnered with companies such as ProtonMail and Write.as. We are also very proud to have joined the LibreHosters network and become part of a bigger movement.

<p>On the other hand, we've also struggled from time to time with financial challenges and moments when we had to overwork due to too many things happening at the same time, and we had to do things like posting a delayed blog post such as the one you are reading right now. Since the beginning, we have omitted the idea of getting external investments to fasten our company growth, as we strongly believe that our core principles should remain unchanged and uninfluenced from capital inflows. This has opened a path for some challenges on the way while things are improving smoothly, and we are investing in having even more sustainable, organic growth.</p>

# Establishing Cloud68.co ÖU
Starting for September 2020, we managed to establish Cloud68.co as an Estonian based company thanks to their e-residency program, and this will allow us to exploit the benefits of the EU market at a legal and financial level, while also being able to provide our customers with more facilities such as more payment gateways and lower and safer transaction fees. We consider this a big step towards the sustainability of our company, with significant importance for each and everyone working with us.
More exciting projects are yet to come, such as a revamp of our 'Community Support Program' which will be announced soon in collaboration with people we respect and the exciting event of the 'LibreHosters festival'. Keep following the news on our blog or <a href="https://cloud68.co/newsletter" target="_blank">subscribe to our newsletter</a> if you want to learn more on what's next!

I have been talking with our team about the fact that since September 2019, the time we launched Cloud68.co, we have done a lot of progress. The thing is, we have been rarely talking about these developments and our progress outside our small, cozy and filled with (soon to be an uncomfortable number of) flowers, Tirana based office. Since early 2019, when we started talking about a company offering ready2use open source digital infrastructure for freelancers and SMEs, we have worked hard to create the brand, the website, partnerships with open source software initiatives, client base and most importantly the ethos, which is the foundation of how we roll as a team trying our best to provide high quality solutions in an ethical way. Hundreds of meetings with or without coffee, discussions, whiteboard sessions and post-its have been spent between a significant number of people. The last weeks we have been pushing each other to change this and agreed to talk more with the outside world about what we do! In practice this means that you will be seeing us posting more on Mastodon/Twitter, share our story and know-how in online or virtual conferences and basically share our news, updates and thoughts in blog posts like this one. The plan is to have a blog post with general updates, some 'how to' blog posts similar to [this one](/blog/blogposts/2fanextcloud), partnership announcements and general news. So, without further ado, here are some of the things we have been intensively working on during Q1 2020.
# Editoria as a Service
[Editoria](https://editoria.community/) is the streamlined online production tool for open publishing. It helps you efficiently produce format-flexible, standards-compliant content items the open source way. It is built by a diverse community of users from across publishing and beyond and after months of testing and working closely with the Editoria team we managed to launch [Editoria as a Service](/instances/editoria) in March 2020. This means that if you need to use Editoria, but don't want to manage hosting, software updates and other maintenance you just sign up for the service and our team will take care of the rest. Here is the [blog post with the announcement](/blog/announcements/announcing-editoria).
# ProtonMail Partnership
Following numerous requests to offer a good, ethical and safe email provider we are quite happy to announce our collaboration with [ProtonMail](/partnerships/protonmail), the world‘s largest encrypted email provider, with over 20 million users. It is empowered by open-source tech and it serves as the email provider of choice for many security-conscious enterprises, including: Healthcare specialists, Non-profit organizations, Professional services firms and Governmental bodies.<br>
Through this partnership both ProtonMail and Cloud68.co will collaboratively continue their work promoting the use of encrypted email as an important way to preserve our right to privacy and keep our communications and business data secure. # Instances info updates
One of the most challenging tasks we have had so far has been defining the right pricing for each package. It is a complex process which requires a lot of calculation and also the need to be careful on providing a price that will be good enough for people to have an incentive to move from [Big Tech](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Tech). We tried our best to find the balance between the value we offer and also a good price which resulted in the publication of the packages for [BigBlueButton video chat](/instances/bigbluebutton), [Discourse](/instances/discourse), [Editoria as a Service](/instances/editoria), [Ghost blogging platform](/instances/ghost), [InvoiceNinja](/instances/invoiceninja), [Nextcloud](/instances/nextcloud) and [Zammad](/instances/zammad).

# A look inside Cloud68.co
We are a relatively new service provider, which for unknown reasons generates often questions on how we do what we do. To answer the questions we asked Boris, our infrastructure ninja team member with [quite questinable taste in music](https://youtu.be/AnMsK_PJYA4), to share a bit of his daily routine. And surprisingly he did, by sharing in a blog post details about his eforts to keep your open source digital infrastructure safe and scalable. Without further ado, [here it is](/blog/blogposts/behind-the-scenes).
# How-to series
Dejvid, a member of our support team and [the new kid on the block](https://youtu.be/iCrargw1rrM), jump-started our new series of 'how to' blog posts where we try to explain in simple words some of the technologies we use here at Cloud68.co. The first article is focused on explaining how [2 factor authentication works on Nextcloud using andOTP app](/blog/blogposts/2fanextcloud). This was an obvious choice following our understanding that 2FA is not the easiest process to explain to everyone using our services. [He also created a video and uploaded it on Peertube showing all the steps](https://peertube.linuxrocks.online/videos/watch/ebb32eb2-692d-4562-9c13-72deb1326bf3).
# Updated Terms of Service
ToS are usually boring texts that nobody reads correct? Not really, at least in our case where the majority of the individuals, companies and institutions that use our services care a lot about their data. This rightfully puts us in a position where we need to review the document from time to time to reflect in the most transparent way how our team operates in terms of managing the data of our partners. With that being said, we carefully reviewed of our ToS and [you can find the update here](/legal/terms-of-service)
You can also [review the changes done so far](https://git.cloud68.co/works/websites/cloud68/commits/master/_pages/legal/terms-of-service.md) and also propose improvements by opening an issue. It would be highly appreciated from the team.
# Monthly newsletter
Some of our favorite open source projects send updates using a monthly newsletter, which is quite cool and with no real desire to reinvent the wheel we thought to also start one. The plan is to share updates from our services, our team, educational material about open source digital infrastructure and everything related to the 68verse. Interested in receiving updates?<br> [Register for our newsletter here](https://cloud68.co/newsletter).

## Coming up next
With the COVId-19 thingy going on a lot of conferences and events close to our heart were either postponed or cancelled. We are looking forward for things to be back to the good old days of socializing in person at SFK, OSCAL and other free libre open source events, but until we still go back to 'normal' we will catch up with our friends and partners at virtual events,
# Open Publishing Fest 2020
*[Open Publishing Fest](https://openpublishingfest.org/) celebrates communities developing open creative, scholarly, technological, and civic publishing projects. This is at once a collaborative and distributed event where participants together find new ground to share ideas about... open publishing. Sessions are hosted by individuals and organizations around the world as panel discussions, fireside chats, demonstrations, and performances.* <br>
*Open Publishing and a Fest? Count us in please! We are crashing the party by co-hosting a session with [punctum books](https://punctumbooks.com) and supporting the initiative with [BigBlueButton](/instances/bigbluebutton) instance for the video chats.*
